Long Term Interest Rates And The Economy- By NEIL SISKIND

As tax cuts have increased the national debt, Treasury sales are set to rise in the second half of 2018. Theoretically, buyers will require higher and higher interest rates. This will hurt the housing market and the overall economy. It could allow the Dollar to stay strong, depending on how much damage higher rates will do to the economy.

However, if foreign investors see higher rates and a stronger Dollar, or any other factor, as causing continued weakness around the world, bond buyers may be content to buy bonds at rates not much higher than we have now, as the safest place for capital. This would keep rates low and could hurt the Dollar- though, if this as seen as keeping the U.S. economy strong, it could help keep the Dollar strong.

But, if the ROW is weak, how long can the U.S. stay strong without U.S. businesses having overseas markets to grow into, or with overseas capital coming into U.S. assets?

The U.S. could end up with lower long term rates, a weaker dollar, weaker business sales to overseas customers, layoffs, a weak consumer, and a weak economy.

If U.S. wages aren’t rising, international sales have to occur for businesses to grow top and bottom lines.

Either long term rates will rise as we pay for the national debt and government spending, which will hurt our economy- or rates will not rise because the ROW is weak and overseas capital is parked in U.S. bonds, which will, eventually, hurt business revenues and earnings.

An economy- our economy- needs good and steady wage growth, reasonably low interest rates, and global markets- not high rates due to debt, or low rates due to sluggishness in target markets- along with stagnant wages and elevated gas prices.

Snapchat Is Something Different Than You Think- By NEIL SISKIND

Snap (perhaps, like Twitter) has grown tired of Snapchat adding users just for the sake of adding users (a trend Facebook started), similar to how any retailer, or any company at all, has no business adding customers just for the sake of adding customers, profitably or not.

Wall Street analysts have decided that user growth, for its own sake, is the social media business plan.

But, it no longer is (besides, “social media” has many definitions and uses).

Snap beat last quarter’s earnings and revenues expectations. It improved on Snapchat’s revenues per user, and Snapchat’s advertising business improved. User growth declined- but who cares? Not Snap.

Snapchat is fast becoming a full service online entertainment company- complimented by offline tools, such as AR hardware, like spectacles. In this regard, there is no company doing what Snapchat is doing- except for pure-play online digital content delivery companies- like Netflix. Snapchat is like Netflix- except that Snapchat is offering a variety of digital and interactive entertainment products- not just movie downloads; and, in the future, Snap’s revenues may be more diversified than it coming mostly from advertising

Snapchat did not “lose’ users. Rather, Snap focused Snapchat on extracting more money from active users- a much better plan.

Snapchat is not just a medium for people to post comments and pictures- like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Snap is looking for Snapchat to make money from a variety of entertainment services and products- not just socializing and sharing comments and pictures.

Snap will be a profitable Internet entertainment business- with social aspects- long before people expect. It will be a profitable, unique, modern age ,digital entertainment company that has value as such, on its own- or as an asset to a larger entertainment or media business that needs the digital entertainment asset with scale.

The Truths About Inflation; And Why America Has Enormous Inflation- By NEIL SISKIND

What is so bad about inflation that the Federal Reserve (and every “Fed”) is always so concerned about staying ahead of it, even, often, to the detriment of economic growth?

We’ve all seen the classic, or iconic, black and white photos, or caricatures, of people standing in lines for food pushing wheelbarrows filled with Dollars. Inflation causes a currency to have less value, requiring more of it to buy a product. For example, a loaf of bread that costs two Dollars can cost three Dollars, due to inflation, where either the currency depreciates, or demand drives up the price.

But, there are forces in place (beyond the Fed and Fed polices) in the modern economy that prevent this from really happening in a significant way.

  1. The Amazon Effect. Companies are so large that their scale can encourage manufacturers or commodity producers to their sell products to them at nearly the same prices as they have been selling to other suppliers before the price rose. While Amazon doesn’t sell its own bread, if bread prices should rise as its input costs (any ingredient in the bread) rise, a company like Amazon could use its buying power and scale to negotiate a way to make money (or break even) by keeping the price down, while its manufacturing source still turns a profit. This can go a long way to keeping prices down. It is what is happening today in many, or most, product categories. In the case of a currency crisis or some exogenous shock, it’s a force- an effect- that could take hold until the crisis passes. A company like Amazon could weather such a storm, to the benefit of the larger economy.
  2. Globalization and Technology. In a modern scientific society, a product that could not easily be obtained in the past can be more readily available using modern farming and manufacturing techniques- such as creating a processed version of the product (in the case of food), or developing a cheaper version of the product in another nation that wants the business, and, which (like China) is abusive to its labor and its environment in order to keep costs down. There are a lot more sourcing options in modern times.
  3. Wages. Americans have traded income growth for lower prices. Americans have been trained by the Internet to find lower and lower prices, and, now, demand them. In order to get lower prices, labor has to be paid lower wages (and globalization has to be introduced into the sourcing and supply chains). If we have lower prices, we don’t need higher incomes. If we have lower incomes, we will not push prices higher. If we have jobs and lower prices, we will not demand higher wages. This is all playing out in the economy today.

But the truth is that America has enormous “bad” inflation. We don’t have consumer product price inflation, due, in large part, to the above factors. We don’t have inflation in the price of bread. But- what is as important as bread and food? We do have enormous inflation in the price of shelter- our houses. An American who makes $75,000.00 a year, for example (though it applies to any American at any income level), can only buy half or three quarters of the house he or she could buy sans existing asset inflation (value is not only a factor of price, but of location, amenities, convenience, and commuting time, among other factors). Extreme inflation does exist. It isn’t demand-driven inflation, or, certainly, wage-driven inflation, or even currency driven- it is liquidity driven inflation (though this has created the demand). When wages and prices are kept suppressed, the Fed is lulled (or, actually, required, by the (apparent) laws of economics that may or may not hold true- such as the Philips curve) into keeping the cost of money suppressed, causing, or certainly resulting in, liquidity bubbles that affect American lives as much as bread does.

We have little price and wage inflation now (maybe none at all in wage levels if you factor in the CPI), yet the Fed is determined to keep raising its target rate. While this is important for long-term economic stability and protection of the currency, it may be in large part due to home prices. Though Fed Chairman Powell rarely (or never) talks about housing prices being too high (probably for fear of causing a panic), and hardly (if ever) talks about housing when he is before Congress- the Fed (like China, which, unlike the Fed, admits it has significant housing inflation), has been steadily raising its target rate- while wages aren’t budging. I say, in this respect, the Fed’s silence on housing is deafening.

If bad inflation affects available capital to buy necessities and has an affect on wealth and quality of life, I’d say that the lack of affordability of houses in America fits within the definition of bad inflation- which has been driven by excess liquidity- as the PCE is muted- and where American’s wages are stuck in the mud.

The U.S. Economy Is “Never” Secure- By NEIL SISKIND

As long as U.S. banks and investors provide capital to Latin America, or to Asia, or to the Middle East, or even to Europe, and as long as investors from these nations and continents own assets in the U.S., the U.S. runs the risk, and can be subject, at anytime, to crashes and crises due to external events- ones outside U.S. borders. These foreign governments lack the diligence, integrity, competence, and legal systems of the United States- and they allow for nepotism and cronyism that put their economies, and, thus, the U.S. economy at risk at all times, so long as the U.S. has its capital in their assets, and/or they have their capital in U.S. assets. Legal, economic, financial, political, or social crises and events in other nations, with their different values, ethics, challenges, and often corrupt legal and political systems, including communist governments, such as China and Russia, put the U.S. economy, real estate market, and stock market at risk for shocks and declines at any moment.

Investors in U.S. assets need to always remember that no matter how strong the economy and the U.S. seems, it is as vulnerable as the assets it holds, or as the holders of its assets cause it to be.

The Bubble Isn’t Popping- It’s Slowly Deflating- By NEIL SISKIND

Oil is down
Copper is down
Wages are down
GDP is headed lower
Bond yields are down
China is down
Consumer debt is up
Government debt is up
Most stocks are down
Homebuilder confidence is down
Housing sales are down in many places- Manhattan, Westchester, etc

If unemployment rises- for any reason- trade wars, business cost controls, lack of capex, rising short term interest rates, lower exports … that would be the final straw- and a big problem.

Snapchat Is Coming …

Snap organized a wonderful turnaround. It stopped adding purposeless users, increased revenues, and lowered losses. All in the shadow of a re-design that kept advertisers, users and Wall Street guessing.

Now that the hard work is done, and a with nice quarter that reflects the operations improvements, revenue will begin to balloon, losses, by cutting back on unproductive services and unproductive user-growth, will shrink, and Snap’s stock will take-off after its next quarterly earning release, which will be stellar- and their might be a buyout before the release.

The Internet, E-commerce, And Loss Of Community- By NEIL SISKIND

Restaurants have been forced to shift to take-out strategies and systems. People want the food they want, where they want it, when they want it. The environments of restaurant, as places where people socialize and feel relaxed, are disappearing. Price and speed is all that matters.

All stores, in fact, have been supplanted by e-commerce and delivery right to the home. The shopping environment, and a place where people run into each other and share their lives, matters less than price and speed of delivery.

The Internet encourages people to do everything form home. Even socializing from home has been developed to supplant real life socializing in community squares, restaurants, and stores.

Shared and pleasant environments- ones that encourage community gathering and shared spaces- have disappeared. Storefronts it empty everywhere.

It is destroying society. A society- a community- is based on sharing environments and experiences- together.

When you have less in common, and less shared spaces, it leads to less shared values, less shared needs, less interaction with neighbors, less empathy and sympathy- and more crime, division, and social seclusion.
