Input Costs and Tariffs

Pundits and analysts continue to overestimate input costs’ affects on prices and on resulting consumer pressures while underestimating the value of having more Americans working in productive good-paying jobs. The latter will be more valuable to the overall economy then the former will be harmful. Large populations of societies at work in decent paying jobs can easily manage 10% increases in product prices.

Retail Issues Are Trickling Down

Brick and mortar retail is being negatively affected by the growing use of e-commerce by consumers. Retail stores (including restaurants), small and large, are closing locations, if not completely going out of business. This is affecting many businesses beyond brick and mortar stores.

This trend of shopping from home, and, thus, the need for less brick and mortar stores, is lessening the need for support services to brick and mortar stores such as sign and awning companies, cleaning services, retail-focused real estate brokers, security services, and, yes, even car washes, as people opt to drive less and order products and food to their homes more, instead of venturing out. This is affecting revenues and profits in these support businesses nationwide.

Also, remember that many brick and mortar stores, themselves, exist mostly by leveraging off of traffic to larger retail stores. Stores in strip malls and even in larger shopping malls have long existed as “parasites retailers”, living off larger retailers’ traffic flows. Thus, local retailers are are hurting, not necessarily due to e-commerce directly, but, rather, indirectly, as the result of  lower mall foot traffic and local-road automobile traffic flows to shopping areas in general.

Liquor stores have historically benefited from food store (a/k/a supermarket) traffic and are suffering from multiple changes in retail trends, including trends towards ordering-in food over the Internet, plus food pricing power of the Walmarts, club stores, and national food stores such as Albertsons and Kroger attracting more of the food shopper dollar, a whole and separate additional cause of lower traffic to local brick and mortar retailers beyond e-commerce. The clubs and national retailers have pricing power on liquor products, flowers, school supplies, greeting cards, and a whole slew of products historically in the domain of local retail stores. Thus, Such retail categories are suffering from a double whammy of technology that creates less need and desire for shopping at brick and mortar malls and stores leading to traffic overflow, plus the pricing power of national companies attracting the brick and mortar shoppers’ dollars.

Most shopping is still done in actual stores to be sure, but the marginal changes in consumer shopping habits are trickling down to retail support businesses nationwide, and these marginal changes combined with national retailer pricing powers are trickling down to and putting out of business parasite retailers across America.

Business Perspectives- Choosing Clients, Partners, Friends And Associates

We will all meet some very very low people in the course of our journeys through this world- especially if we run businesses. When it comes to money people act insane- including those who purport to not care about money. They are often the worst because, deep down, they resent those who have it, knowing they can’t attain it. I do my best to minimize contact with certain kinds of people. This is done by looking at their past and their track record in life, and if you can’t see one (a past) or figure out what it is- walk away from the person or the professional relationship. There are emotions and resentments which lurk deep inside people which have built up over a number of years that you will never know about- until you say the wrong thing. Angering a stranger, whose temper and capacity for rage you do not know, can be dangerous.

Socialize and work through friends and associates only, whenever possible. Life is too short to befriend or work with angry, vindictive and resentful people.

Branding Will Evolve

Fashion and cache will play lesser and lesser roles in product purchase decisions. “Quality” will be the main purpose for buying products- as opposed to the label attached. Secondarily, the story behind a given brand will be more valuable than the status it evokes and symbolizes. Supporting a good story will be a form of status for customers. Price will play a role in that people will give on quality in exchange for a lower price.

Interestingly, as the world goes more corporate (meaning larger brands and larger stores are controlling more and more of the market), new trends in branding, per the above, will provide smaller brands and new entrepreneurs with opportunities to launch quality, meaningful products. Their markets will be niche and they will have to use e-commerce as their main distribution channel. But as long as they are dedicated to a quality product, and a defined customer to whom they relate and who relates to the brand and company in-kind, new brands will find places in the market despite shrinking retail distribution channels and large corporate competitors.

Making a quality product for a customer who appreciates the product and the company will, in the future, be more of determinants than ever of what products customers buy, use, and wear.

Product Investors: Financing Purchase Orders

Retail distribution outlets (i.e. stores) are growing increasingly tight and narrow. Small boutique retail stores are getting eaten-alive by the combination of e-commerce and big box retailers. Big box retailer are, themselves, getting squeezed by Internet retailers. Internet retailers are getting put-out of business by large Internet retailers that have greater scale, greater marketing, smaller margins, and quicker shipping.

Getting a new product (or even continuing an existing product) in a retail outlet is harder than ever in history- and it has always been difficult. New product manufacturers should strongly consider developing their own e-commerce distribution outlets (websites) and do what they can to distinguish their product and reach their niche customer. Creativity is key. Manufacturers must also have an Amazon sales strategy.

As an investor, the best products in which to invest can be those that already have purchase orders and need financing in order to manufacture the necessary inventory. An investor who invests $100,000.00, $200,000.00 to fund actual purchases stand the highest chance of getting their money back, and relatively quickly (while retaining any equity position they require and negotiate).

Such investors should require to get paid back off of “top line” sales revenues from the product they financed. This protects against losses from any returns from retailers or end-user customers.

In addition, any funding for inventory against purchase orders can be secured by such inventory, receivables from the product, company receivables already due from sales of the product or from other products they sell, and/or by company hard assets. Plus, personal guaranties can be obtained. Any company who believes in its purchase orders should be asked to personally guaranty investor payback.

In the case of purchase orders, investors should make sure they have not expired and that shipping dates can be met. Perhaps, more important, or equally so, investors should contact retail buyers to get a feeling for the level of interest in getting the product into their stores. Even if purchase orders are set to expire, it may be obvious to an investor that they will be extended or re-written.

Investing in product and in companies with purchase orders in-hand is one of the least risky ways, or the least risky way, to invest in products.

Lone Wolves

Nothing assists these lone wolf terrorist attacks more than the media that provides them with the worldwide coverage they seek and which they require in order to have relevance.

The greed of the media for the next story around which to sell advertising-time has no bounds.

We Destroy Our Own Retailers. Why?

25 years after the L.A. riots that followed on the heels of the verdict in the trial of the officers who beat Rodney King, I watch film of the rioting and wonder, “Why would the rioters go into stores in their own communities and destroy and loot them?” Many of these stores (not all) were African American owned local mom and pop shops- liquor stores, clothing stores, supermarkets.

Likewise, people today go into retail stores in their own communities across America and then go home and get online to critique, complain about, and degrade the stores, the employees, the service, the prices, the decor…. Anything that can be degraded, they find a way. And then they wonder why they have no more good stores in their communities; why restaurants close; why they can’t succeed with a local business idea; why every store in town is a corporate box; why storefronts are empty and decaying; and why they can’t find jobs close to home.

People have used the Internet to destroy the idea of retail entrepreneurship in America and then they wonder why they have to fill-out job applications for Walmart, Target, and Home Depot in order to work close to home, rather than own their own business close to home.

People destroy their own retailers  (as well as businesses of all kinds that are owned by their neighbors and located in their own communities) with Internet negativity, leaving huge voids for giant corporations like Starbucks, Panera Bread, Amazon, and Walmart to control their respective consumer lives…..and their careers.

“IF” people were intelligent, they would go online to “talk-up” every retailer in their respective towns, saying how great the service is, or how great the shopping environment is, or how great the selection is, resulting in having more thriving local stores and restaurants, more jobs for themselves in their communities, and more opportunities to start small businesses of their own- better options, I’d say, than helping to tear-down many local entrepreneurs to the benefit of a few giant companies who have taken over.

Instead of using the Internet to be creative and profitable, and to help their respective communities to thrive over other communities by promoting the good qualities of their local stores and business owners, the masses have chosen to go online to be critical and cruel and give-up all power over their communities and their own career options. Smart.

Business Perspectives

Temper tantrums, degradation, and/or personal insults will never lead to success in business or in life. I have never used any of these tactics in what turned out to be successful business transactions or career moves. Burning bridges is the worst strategy in life for achieving anything worthwhile and respectable. The proof is in the pudding- always.

Bald Eagle On The Nature Preserve

Growing up, and even as an adult, I’d never seen a bald eagle, except on TV. Bald eagles are almost enigmas- a national symbol that you never really see for yourself. I never even thought they could be found in the wild on the east coast. I believed they lived only in Washington State, Oregon, California, Alaska- the west coast only.

Today, on an amazing hike to survey the boundaries and elevations of The Neil S. Siskind Nature Preserve in the Hudson Valley, I saw my very first bald eagle. It was breathtaking. It was like seeing a national treasure. It was standing on the river banks, itself surveying the landscape and river. It was startled by my presence and took to flight, launching its majestic body over the river, flaunting its beautiful and prominent wingspan, and then gracefully gliding overhead. I did all I could to capture and savor the moment. Majestic, Presidential, awesome, historical, legendary….all words that rushed across my mind in that instant.

I am inspired to, and am now exploring possible ways to create a bald eagle refuge on my nature preserve to help this regal bird to thrive in the Hudson Valley.

The Internet Strikes Again

Another lost and purposeless soul using the Internet to hurt others. Some people have found a home for their sadness and hatred for the world and everyone in it  – the Internet – and just use their lives to attack others, verbally and violently, online.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/04/16/easter-day-slaughter-cleveland-cops-searching-for-alleged-killer-who-broadcast-murder-on-facebook.html

p.s. Thanks for continuing to enable this, Facebook, with Facebook Live- broadcasting rapes, murders, bullying……..a wonderful service you have provided for the insane. How Facebook stays in business and how their stock stays intact after enabling the broadcasts of rapes and murders is really beyond me. No one seems to care.
