Relationships in Business

Relationships are the key to success in almost every type of business. Manufacturers need relationships with lenders and distributors; distributors need relationships with retailers; service providers need relationships to refer them quality clients; real estate owners need relationships with banks and contractors; restaurants make their money best when they have a variety of “regulars”; retailers analyze their customers’ habits so that they can tailor predictable interactions. In my experience, working with or for total strangers is risky, unfulfilling, and often unproductive. If you want to be in a business of any sort, create good relationships. This is far better a way in business than with marketing that attracts strangers. Strangers don’t care about you. Just read what customers write on Yelp about businesses they’ve patronized where no one really knows each other. There is no bond; no feeling of a duty of decency. Your relationships will help you to achieve, and to know whom to trust.”

Did Burke Ramsey Accidentally Make an Admission?

The surviving members of JonBenet Ramsey’s family, John, Patsy and Burke Ramsey, have long claimed that an intruder broke into their home and murdered JonBenet. There was no physical evidence, no eyewitness evidence, and no DNA evidence of any intruder in any room of the house or near any entrance or exit point of the house. Each member of the Ramsey family themselves reported to have neither seen nor heard any intruder. Yet, this was the position taken by each of the surviving Ramseys in the murder of JonBenet, and to date there has been no indictments or prosecutions of the murder. In an interview of Burke Ramsey last month as the 20th anniversary of JonBenet’s death approached, Dr. Phil asked Burke a question which Burke answered quite curiously. In fact, he answered it in a way that, in my judgment, implicated himself and his whole family.

Dr. Phil’s question: “Did you hit your sister over the head with a baseball bat or a flashlight?”

Burke Ramsey’s answer: “Absolutely not.”

Dr. Phil’s Follow-up question: “If someone in your house did, do you think you would have heard it?”

Burke’s Ramsey’s answer: “Probably…yeah.”

But someone in the house “did” hit JonBenet with a bat or a flashlight (or similar object). No matter who it was…someone, in fact, did. That’s a fact. So then Burke is saying that he heard it. He is also implicitly stating that he thinks anyone in the house during such an event that night all would have heard it. So since it did happen, then Burke heard it, by virtue of his answer, “Probably….yeah”.

Set forth as an equation:

IF JonBenet was hit over head by someone in the house THEN I would have heard it (Quote: “Probably…yeah”). Therefore SINCE JonBenet was hit over the head in the house THEN I heard it.

Since no one who was in the house when JonBenet’s was murdered said that they heard anything, then, they, by virtue of Burke’s answer, are either lying about not hearing JonBenet get hit over the head when it happened (at least Burke is lying)…or else they did it….or both.

At the very least, Burke, now, admitted, in his very own words, that he heard JonBenet get hit over the head with an object the night (or early morning) of her murder, but at the time, and ever since, he said that he heard nothing.

The likelihood is that Burke got confused by the question and did not want to say “no” to the obvious…that he would hear someone hit someone in his house over the head with an object. Burke confused the actual facts with the Dr. Phil hypothetical and accidentally answered the hypothetical factually. He said, “Yeah”…not realizing that he was implicating himself. He was admitting that he heard it….or he was admitting that if he wasn’t doing it, he would have heard it since any person in the house would hear such.

There are no two ways about this. Burke admitted, by his very own words, that he heard his sister being hit over the head….because it actually happened, and he said he would have heard it if it happened; OR he admitted he did it, because neither he nor his parents ever reported hearing something that is an uncontroverted fact- JonBenet was hit over the head while she, Burke and John and Patsy Ramsey were in the same house, and Burke said that if it happened, he (0r someone in the house) would have heard it[1].

What happened here is that Burke’s strategy of deny, deny, deny….I heard nothing, saw nothing, know nothing….came back to bite him. He is so programmed to always deny doing anything other than sleeping, that he denied an undisputed fact- that JonBenet was hit over the head in the house. In Burke’s mind, he was saying that he heard and saw nothing so he therefore knows and did nothing; or he went into defense of his parents mode- as if to say that if his parents did this he would have heard it, and he heard nothing, so his parents must have done nothing. But he actually ended-up saying that he would have heard something like this if it happened and he did not hear anything, so therefore it didn’t happen- which of course makes no sense since JonBenet was hit over the head with an object in the house, regardless of who did it.

Burke accidentally stated, implicitly, that he didn’t hear anything, so he didn’t do it; and that he didn’t hear anything, so his parents didn’t do it; and that if someone did this, he probably would have heard it. But he didn’t hear it- according to his position of 20 years! So that means no one did it??  He got entangled in his own story and confused himself….which is something liars often do. Instead of denying a conclusion, theory or accusation, things to which Burke is accustomed to denying……..he denied known facts- that his sister was hit over the head in the house while he was there.

Dr. Phil should have followed up with, “Well, okay, your sister did get hit over the head with an object in the house- so you heard it? Because you just said you would have heard such”. How could Burke now say “no”? That would be a complete contradiction of what he just said- that he would hear such a thing.

________________________________________________

footnote:

[1] Burke’s facial expression, biting his lower lip with his eyes looking to the side and then downward, after he realized what he just admitted, was almost more telling and stunning than the answer itself.

Neil Siskind- Debt Help for Single Mothers

As part of The Siskind Law Firm’s heritage of providing pro bono legal counsel and fairly priced legal programs to benefit the most challenged and vulnerable citizens of New York (see: http://savingseniorcitizens.com/, and http://siskindlawfirm.com/neil-siskind-free-start-business/), we have launched our pro minus “Debt Aid” service for New York’s Single Mothers.

We recognize the financial burdens and the impractical legal costs for certain individuals in retaining an attorney to help deal with creditors and debt collectors. But having an attorney on your side to deal with a debt collection action or debt-related lawsuit levels the playing field, ensures that the debt is legitimate, makes sure that debtors are not unduly or illegally harassed, ensures that creditors follow proper legal procedures, and protects debtors from paying more money to creditors than necessary.

In the goal of helping New York’s single moms, we offer a flat $250.00 fee Debt Aid service to debtors where we:
– Respond to collector or attorney letters and phone calls
– Advise on how to handle a lawsuit complaint served upon you
– Negotiate with creditors on your behalf
– Review facts of the alleged debt to ensure there was really a debt
– Uncover facts that may make the debt improper or not collectable
– Ensure that proper collection practices are being followed
– Attempt to settle the debt for a mutually agreeable amount
– Get a proper written settlement agreement

The flat fee for our Debt Aid services is $250.00. There are no additional legal fees or charges (except for any overnight and certified mailings at clients’ requests). Services and fees are subject to a written agreement between this firm and the respective client.

We can try to help you if you have received:
– A collection letter
– A collection phone call
– A summons and complaint, or
– Notice of a judgment against you for a debt

We provide legal services- not debt settlement services

We are a law firm, not a debt settlement company of any sort.

We do not work with credit card companies or banks. We will work with certain other companies claiming monies you owe, and with collection agencies and law firms that have contacted you to collect specific debts.

We work with businesses, creditor’s attorneys or collection agencies to settle claims for an amount that you, the client, determines is acceptable.

Email us today at nsiskind@siskindlawfirm.com to learn about our flat $250.00 fee “Debt Aid”services for New York Single Mothers.

Due to the large volume of inquiries for this program, please allow up to 24 hours to receive a response.

Note: If your wages have already been garnished, or your bank account has been frozen or levied, our single mother Debt Aid program may not be proper for you.

*Due to time limitations and the large numbers of inquiries we receive for debt collection and debt lawsuit aid, we will only be accepting 10 new clients per month for this service.
**Services provided and terms of services are subject to a service engagement letter agreement between this law firm and the specific client.
***Single moms must have a one-person income and receive no alimony.

Stick With What Got You There

Often, once a certain level of career success has been attained, people grow bored of the monotony. Or, after doing things year after year, no matter how successfully, it is natural to want to try things that are new to you and that seem interesting.

But beware of the inherent pitfalls.

Your success is tied into your skill set. Your skill set has developed within the environment where you have worked and thrived. When you enter into a different environment, your knowledge of the terrain is not as keen or developed as in the place where your success to date has been achieved.

People that have worked in wholesale businesses- selling products or services from one business entity to another- do not necessarily have the skills to work directly with consumer end-users. People who have worked in sophisticated business fields (such as law or finance) are not properly equipped to deal with more creative types who lack an understanding of how business and capital operate. People in creative fields who have made money, often get burned when trying to turn themselves into investors. Doctors who go into business often lose money. Athletes who are great on ball fields most often do not thrive in the business world following retirement.

Although we all want to explore opportunities and expand our respective horizons and get the most out of life, business is tricky- and people are even trickier. Success in one genre or category of business with a certain kind of people will not necessarily translate to success in other business categories or with other kinds of people.

So while it is good to try new things and give everything your very best, be aware that people are unforgiving, and success in your area does not indicate for success elsewhere. Find ways to stick as closely to your type of business and type of customer while adding on, incrementally, to your core areas of skills and success, rather than going full-charge at an entirely new business, working with an entirely new type of customer or client. Stick, mostly, to the customer whom you understand and who operates on your intellectual and experience level. It’s not as exiting as a totally virgin venture. But predictability of interactions, and working with nice people of your kind, has an enjoyment of its own.
